Head Shaving and Razor Bumps

There is nothing worse than ingrown hairs and razor bumps on a bald head and neck. They’re uncomfortable and they look awful. Here are a few tips to help you keep razor bumps and ingrown hairs at bay.

Shave with the grain - Shaving with the grain is gentle and ensures hair is cut above the skin’s surface. Shaving against the grain is a recipe for ingrown hairs; it causes the razor to pull and lift hair cutting it below the surface of the skin. Hair can become trapped under the skin’s surface resulting in ingrown hairs and bumpy inflammation.

Exfoliate - Exfoliating removes dead skin cells from the surface layers of the skin revealing healthier smooth skin. Exfoliating can also help to dislodge ingrown hairs. Choose you exfoliant wisely. Salicylic acid, glycolic acid and sugar are great options.

Be gentle - Avoid shaving & skincare products with fragrances, coloring agents and harsh preservatives. Even some natural ingredients are far too harsh for the skin. Harsh ingredients trigger inflammation resulting in less-than smooth skin. Spare your bald head and spray your cologne elsewhere. Shave hydrated - A moisturizing shave gel or cream will keep your skin and hair soft and pliable. When the hair is soft less pressure is needed when shaving.

Grooming Tip: A grooming tip specifically for men who shave their heads is to shave consistently. Shaving on a regular schedule encourages a consistent growth pattern. This helps reduce irritation because the scalp becomes accustomed to the shaving routine. When you shave your head, you shouldn't let it grow out too much because it looks sloppy. I personally shave my head every other day. Another grooming tip is to use Aloe Vera, preferably directly from the plant. Aloe reduces irritation, treats blemishes, moisturizes and relieves ingrown hairs, especially for men of color.

Favorite DomeCare Solutions Product: Dome Shine-Absorbing Anti-Aging Finishing Serum is my favorite product to use personally and on clients. It makes a shaved head feel satiny smooth, and you can feel the difference in the health of the scalp. The Dome Shave Gel is another favorite. I like using the Dome Shave Gel on my clients because it’s clear and I can see exactly where I’m shaving. A small amount of Shave Gel goes a long way; it doesn’t clog the razor and it’s clean. You can’t see through traditional shave creams so there is room for error and they can be messy. Many of my clients work nearby in the Financial District & Union Square; they come to my shop for shaves and haircuts on their lunch breaks. My clients need to leave my chair fresh and clean to go back to work.

Sun spots, discolorations, a leathery texture and fine lines are tell-tale signs of an unhealthy bald head. The good news is with a proper shaving and skincare regimen any man can have a healthier bald dome. The main culprits of visible damage are exposure to harmful environmental elements such as UV rays, pollution and the use of irritating grooming products. Anti-aging skincare is the practice of using gentle, multi-functional grooming preparations that reduce and prevent the signs of aging. Embracing the following types of ingredients in your head shaving routine will have you on your way to a healthy bald dome.

Antioxidants are ingredients that neutralize damage caused from environmental factors such as UV rays, smog and smoke. Some antioxidants can stimulate collagen production, help skin generate healthier skin cells and fade discolorations. Antioxidants can also boost collagen production and strengthen the support structure of the skin, softening the appearance of fine lines.

Embrace: Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Niacinamide, Alpha Lipoic Acid & Coenzyme q10.

Anti-irritants are ingredients that reduce skin irritation and inflammation. Irritation can be caused by shaving, using irritating ingredients or simply from having sensitive skin. Skin irritation is problematic because it breaks down collagen, destructs the skins natural barrier, can cause the skin to become even more sensitive and can even trigger oil production. Anti-irritants can quickly calm skin and reduce inflammation which balances skin improving its overall health.

Embrace: Allantoin, Aloe Vera Extract, Centella Asiatica, Green Tea Extract & Willow Herb Extract.

Exfoliants work by removing dead and thickened surface layers of the skin and some exfoliate inside the pores. As skin ages, so does the process of shedding skin cells. Exposure to the sun is the quickest way to damage the scalp and cause premature aging such has wrinkles, discolorations and a rough texture. Applying SPF daily, even on cloudy days, will keep a bald head healthy for the long-term.

Embrace: An SPF product labeled "broad spectrum" will provide UVA & UVB protection. Sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher is best. Don't forget to reapply!

Embrace: When spending an extended time in the sun and at times when the sun is most intense (typically 10 am to 2 pm) take protection a step further and wear a cap.

It's never too early or too late to start using high quality, multi-functional shaving and skin care products and embracing these excellent ingredients.
